COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Marist women's water polo team moved to 3-4 on the season with a pair of close games against the #18 Princeton Tigers and the host Maryland Terrapins at the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore utility Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) combined to score five goals on the day, as classmate Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored three goals in the two games.
The Red Foxes took on Princeton to open the day. The game was close throughout, with Marist taking a 3-2 lead after the first quarter only to let the Tigers tie the game at 4-4 to end the first half. With the game tied 7-7 after three quarters, Princeton showed my they are ranked among the nation's best. The Tigers outscored the Red Foxes 3-1 in the deciding quarter to win 10-8.
Swartz and freshman Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.), Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.), and Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) had one goal apiece. Tanya Wilcox and Lauren Brunner each led Princeton with two goals.
In the nightcap, Marist took on the host Maryland Terrapins. The Red Foxes took a 6-4 lead into the half, only to let Maryland outscore them 5-2 in the second half to win 9-8. Once again, Swartz led the Red Foxes in scoring with a hat trick while Rampton scored a pair of goals. Hatcher, Sunday, and Barnett also netted goals for Marist. Maggie Eicks, Laurel Laidlaw, and Christen Vagts each led Maryland with a pair of goals.
Marist concludes play in the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday with a 1 p.m game against George Washington.
