CHARLESTON, S.C. - Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, and Jessica Green (Manassas, Va) hit a two-run homer as the Marist softball team beat UNC-Wilmington 8-2 in their opening game at the College of Charleston Invitational. The win moves the Red Foxes to 3-3 on the year. They will play Akron later this evening.
Marist pushed across three runs in the top of the second. Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) reached on an error to start the inning. Freshman Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) singled to put runners on first and second with none out. UNC-Wilmington (2-5) pitcher Samantha Lisowsky retired the next two Red Foxes before Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) hit a sharp ground ball back to Lisowsky. Lisowsky fielded cleanly but over threw first. The error allowed two runs to score. Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) then singled to bring home Woody.
"We did a great job running the bases aggressively all afternoon," said head coach Erin Layton. "Kate (Malloy) and Heather (Viola) both made aggressive decisions and they both paid off with runs."
The Red Foxes tacked on two runs in the third and two more in the fourth. The runs in the fourth came on Green's homer.
Green went 2-for-4 with three RBI on the afternoon. Junior Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) also had two hits and two runs scored. Castellano, Malloy, Alison Catenacci (Medfield, Mass.), and Pomes all had hits.
Rigos's went the distance. She gave up one hit and one earned run. She struck out nine and walked two. The win moves her record to 3-1 on the year.
The Red Foxes will play Akron at 8 p.m.
