DELAND, Fla. - On Friday evening the Marist softball team dropped a 7-2, eight inning decision to the Hatters of Stetson. The Red Foxes committed a key error in the top of the eighth inning that opened the door for Stetson to score six runs.
Marist took an early 1-0 lead when Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.).
The lead would hold until the top of the fourth before Stetson was able to knot the score at 1-1.
Stetson broke through in extra innings during International Tie Break rules (ITB). During ITB, a runner starts on second base. The Hatters were able to push across six runs in the inning, ending Marist's chances.
"We played a strong game, and it got away a little bit at the end," Marist head coach Erin Layton said. "We had quality at-bats throughout, and we just weren't able to produce enough for the win. Overall, I am happy with where the team is, and I look for us to continue making strides towards getting that first win."
Marist (0-2) had seven hits on the night. They were led by Giordano who went 3-for-4. Catenacci drove in both Marist runs.
Heather Viola (East Meadow, N.Y.) started the game on the mound for Marist and pitched five strong innings. She allowed one run and had one strikeout. She also scattered seven hits. Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) took the loss (0-1).
Stetson pitcher Erica Demers went the distance and picked up the win.
