FORT COLLINS, COLO. - The Marist women's water polo team opened the 2008 season on Saturday, winning two of their three games at the Hilton Hotels Invitational hosted by Colorado State. The Red Foxes defeated the host Rams and UC-Santa Cruz, but fell to Bucknell in their opening game.
In their season opener, Marist took on Bucknell. After the two teams ended the first quarter tied at two, the Bison outscored the Red Foxes 9-1 over the next two periods to go ahead 11-3. Marist scored three goals in the fourth quarter to make the score 12-6. Sophomore Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led all scorers with a hat trick, as Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas), Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.), and freshman Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) all scored for Marist. Pauli also had three assists to lead the Red Foxes.
The Red Foxes responded in their next game, taking down the host Colorado State 11-5. Senior Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) had a hat trick in the game, as Pauli, Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.), and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) each had two tallies in the game. Marist had a 9-2 lead after three quarters to cruise past the Rams. Hatcher also had five steals to lead the defensive effort.
In the nightcap, Marist took down UC-Santa Cruz 12-8. The Red Foxes led 9-2 at half and withstood a late charge from the Banana Slugs to win their second game in a row. Swartz scored four goals to lead Marist, as McCahill had a hat trick. Freshman Colleen Lischwe (Kirkwood, Mo.) scored her first two career goals in the win.
Marist (2-1) concludes play in the Hilton Invitational tomorrow with two more games. The Red Foxes will take on Colorado State tomorrow at 9 a.m. and will take on either Bucknell or UC-Santa Cruz later in the day.
