DOVER, Del.- The Marist softball team split a doubleheader on the opening day of the Delaware State Tournament. The Red Foxes (6-8) dropped game one to Delaware 3-0, but came back with an extra-inning win over Delaware State in game two. Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) drove in Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) for the game-winning run in the eighth inning of the second game.
Marist was held to four hits in opener. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched a complete game, three-hitter in the loss. She struck out 12 and gave up three runs (one earned).
In the second game, Malloy hit a based loaded, game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pomes (Milford, Pa.) scored the winning run.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) got the start for Marist. She went four plus innings and had six strikeouts. Heather Viola (East Meadow, N.Y.) came on in relief and got her first collegiate win.
Shortstop Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) extended her hitting streak to ten games with a hit in game one and two hits in game two.
Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) went 2-for5 in the second game, and Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Pomes went 2-for-4.
The Red Foxes will continue play in the Delaware State Tournament tomorrow with a game versus St. Francis (Pa.). Game time is set for 2:15 p.m.
