CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Marist softball team broke out of a three game slump and beat Howard 7-2 in their final game of the round-robin style College of Charleston Invitational. The Red Foxes (4-6) were led by Alison Catenacci (Medfield, Mass.). The senior went 3-for-3 and had two RBI's in the win.
Caitlin Carpentier (Shirky, N.Y.) started for Marist and got the win (1-2). She went four innings and scattered five hits. The junior had seven strikeouts and did not allow a run. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched the final three innings, giving up two runs. All nine outs Rigos recorded were strikeouts.
Marist jumped out to an early lead by scoring four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Howard starter Christina McCoy was relieved after she walked the first two batters of the game. Jessica Hurston came in to walk the next two Red Foxes. The second walk forced in a run. Catenacci then hit a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. Hurston got the next two batters before Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) hit an RBI single with two outs.
The Red Foxes tacked on two runs in the third and one more in the fifth. De la Llave and Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) hit back-to-back triples for the fifth inning run.
Giordano, de la Llave, and Mary Beth Pomes all had two hits. De la Lave and Giordano each had an RBI. Giordano extended her hitting streak to five games and is now hitting .429 through the first ten games of the season.
Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.), Jessica Green, and McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) all had Marist hits.
The Red Foxes were held to nine hits in their previous three games of the tournament.
Marist will visit Army on March 6 (Thursday) for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
