March 25, 2008

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Marist softball team split a doubleheader with Binghamton on Tuesday afternoon on Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched her eighth complete game of the season and struck out 12 as the Red Foxes won the opener, 3-1. Binghamton took the nightcap, 5-3. Marist had 15 hits on the afternoon.

Rigos and Binghamton pitcher Jessica Whitaker matched zeros for the first two and a half innings of game one.

The Red Foxes (9-13) were able to break through in the bottom of the third. Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.). After a ground out, senior Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) came through with an RBI single to put the Red Foxes up 1-0.

The Bearcats (3-14) answered with a run in the top of the fourth to knot the score at 1-1, but Marist came right back to take the lead in their half of the inning. Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) led off with a walk and was eventually doubled in by Pomes.

The Red Foxes tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) ripped a one out double to left center to put runners on second and third with one out. Malloy followed with a single that plated Green, but the rally ended when Castellano stepped off third when the pitcher was in the circle.

Seven of the nine Red Fox starters had a hit in game one, and Pomes and Castellano each had two.

With the win, Rigos improves to 6-6 on the year. She scattered three hits and now has eight complete games in nine starts this year.

In game two, the Red Foxes broke through first when Green blasted a deep solo homer to right center to lead off the fourth inning.

The 1-0 lead would hold until the top of the fifth when Binghamton was able to push across five runs on four hits and three Marist errors.

The Red Foxes were able to push across a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh but could not find a way to fight all the way back.

Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) went the first 4.2 innings for the Red Foxes. She gave up five runs (one earned) and struck out seven. Heather Viola came in and threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. The freshman has been especially sharp in her last three outings.

De la Llave had a triple and an RBI in the loss. Pomes, McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.), Malloy, and Alison Catenacci (Medfield, Mass.) all had Marist hits.

Binghamton had five hits in the game two win. Emily Philips homered and tripled, and Deannie Plemon had a single and two RBI's.

"I was very happy with the way we swung the bats today," Marist head coach Erin Layton said. "We were aggressive and made some good things happen."

With the split, Marist has now won three of their last four games heading into tomorrow's doubleheader at Seton Hall.

Game one is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
