March 26, 2008

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- The Marist softball team won a 1-0 decision in the first game of a doubleheader with Seton Hall on Wednesday, but dropped the nightcap 6-1. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched a two-hitter for the win in game one, and Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) hit a solo home run with two outs in the sixth inning to account for the game's only run.

Rigos pitched her ninth complete game of the season. She had seven strikeouts and no walks and improved her record to 7-6 on the year. The senior went the first 6.1 innings without allowing a hit. She has won her last three starts.

Marist (10-14) had three hits in game one; Giordano's homer and singles by Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.).

Heather Viola (East Meadow, N.Y.) started game two and took the loss. She gave up six runs in three innings of work. Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) relieved Viola and tossed three scoreless innings.

The Red Foxes had eight hits in game two but could only push across one run.

"We hit the ball pretty well in that second game," Marist head coach Erin Layton said. "We couldn't get that big hit and ended up leaving a lot of runners on base."

Giordano was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) had two singles and a run scored. Pamela de la Llave (West Orange N.J.), Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.), and Pomes all singled in game two.

Seton Hall (10-13) struck early in game two when Michelle Reed who singled and stole second to start the Pirates' first, scored on an RBI single by Leah Menichetti to make it 1-0. Kealan Waldron followed with a bloop double before Jenna Best cleared the bases with a three-run homer to make it 4-0. With one away, junior Shannon Pease hit a solo home run to put the Pirates up by five after inning one.

Marist scored their run in the top of the fifth inning when Woody singled, Pomes doubled, and Giordano drove in Woody with a single.

"Overall, I am happy with how we played again," Layton said. "We are putting some things together and are really playing some consistent softball. It's good to see with our conference season right around the corner."

Marist has now won four of six following a 1-5 spring break trip. The Red Foxes will return to action when travel to Providence for a doubleheader on Sunday.
