Game Two Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College Friars took a pair of one-run games and earned a doubleheader sweep of Marist (10-16) at Raymond Field in Providence on Sunday. The Friars (15-11-1) won 1-0 in the opener and took game two in eight innings, 6-5. Freshman McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) hit her first career home run in the game two loss for Marist.

Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started game one and was the hard luck loser. The senior went all six innings, giving up one unearned run. She scattered three hits and struck out seven. Rigos (7-7) has given up just one earned run in her last 27 innings pitched.

Marist's best chance to score came in the top of the second inning. Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) hit a one out single through the right side, and after a strikeout, Campbell was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with two outs. Nine hitter, Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.), hit a hard grounder up the middle that Providence pitcher Danielle Bertolette deflected to shortstop Jenna Garcia, who finished the 1-6-3 and ended the Marist threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, Katelyn Revens of Providence reached on an infield single. The Friars put runners on first and second with none out after a Marist throwing error on a sac bunt attempt by Jenna Garcia. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Christy Becker delivered a sac fly to drive in the game winning run.

Bertollete went the distance for Providence striking out five and giving up two hits. She is now 7-4.

Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) and Castellano had the two Marist hits.

In the second game, the two teams combined for 19 hits and 11 runs after combining for just five hits and one run in the first game.

In the top of the second, Annie Castellano doubled off Providence starter Jennifer Maccio, and Alison Cantenacci (Medfield, Mass.) followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with none out, but the Red Foxes couldn't capitalize.

Providence broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Justine Stratton.

Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) went the first 3.2 innings on the mound. The junior gave up two runs and seven hits.

In the top of the sixth, McCallion Campbell hit her first career home run to left center to give the Red Foxes their first lead of the day.

The Marist lead was short-lived as the Friars answered in the bottom of half of the sixth. Samantha Pittman led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. After Heather Viola (East Meadow, N.Y.) induced a ground out, Teresa Bertels laced an RBI single down the third base line to knot the score 3-3.

In the Red Fox seventh, Giordano was hit by a pitch with one out to set the table for Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.), who delivered a clutch, RBI double to left center. De la Llave then scored from second following a Friar throwing error on a hard hit ground ball off the bat of Green to make the score 5-3.

The Red Fox lead was once again short lived as Christy Becker hit a two out, two-run homer to tie the score 5-5 for the Friars in the last of the seventh.

Marist went in order in the top of the eighth and Justine Stratton struck again for the Friars in the bottom half. The freshman hit a one out, walk-off for the Providence win.

Castellano led the Red Foxes with two hits and two RBI's. Giordano, de la Llave, Green, Campbell, and Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) had one hit apiece.

Stratton, Garcia, Mary Rose Sheehy, Pittman, and Teresa Bertels all had multiple hits for Providence. The Friars totaled 12 hits in the night cap.

Viola took the loss in relief of Carpentier. The freshman gave up four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Her record falls to 1-3 on the year.

Marist will return to action Tuesday at Albany. Game one is set for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
