Game Two Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Marist softball team split a doubleheader versus Army on Thursday. The Red Foxes (5-7) won 2-1 in game one and fell 2-0 in game two. Freshman Heather Young (Saugerties, N.Y.) delivered an RBI single in the top of the seventh and Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched a complete game in the game one win.

In game one, Rigos (4-2) and Army pitcher Veronica Barth put zeros on the board through the first five innings

Mairst was able to get on the board first. Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) started the sixth with a single to right field. Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) followed de la Llave's single with an RBI double to deep left. She was cut down rounding second.

Army came back in bottom half of the inning. Rigos walked the lead-off hitter and then threw a wild pitch. After a sac bunt and a strikeout, another wild pitch allowed the tying run to score.

The Red Foxes then answered with the game winner in the top of the seventh. Terah Paluba (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) sacrificed the runner, and McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) hit a hard single passed the third baseman to set things up for the freshman Young, who was pinch hitting. With runners on first and third and one out, Young hit a hard ground ball through the right side, plating pinch runner Heather Viola (East Meadow, N.Y.).

Rigos allowed a one out walk in the bottom of the seventh but was able to strand the runner, and Marist held on for the win. The senior had ten strike outs and allowed three hits in her seven innings of work.

Rigos and the Marist defense stranded seven Black Knight base runners.

Giordano was the only player on either team with two hits. She went 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, Marist was out-hit 11-6 and just could not come up with the big hit. The Red Foxes stranded nine base runners.

Army had runners on base all game but could only push across single runs in the third and fourth. The Black Knights stranded ten.

Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) started for Marist. The junior went three and two-thirds. She scattered eight hits and gave up two runs.

The Marist defense shined throughout the second game. In the first, with runners on second and third and two out, Giordano went in the whole and made a great stop on a hard hit ground ball off the bat of Veronica Barth. She got up, made the throw, and Young made a fantastic pick at first.

Third baseman McCallion Campbell also saved a run with a diving play on a hard hit ground ball.

"Our defense was great all day. We made them earn it, and I am happy with that," Marist head coach Erin Layton said after the game. "In both games we played well as a unit, and never stopped working. We had some good at-bats in the second game but just didn't come up with that big hit."

Heather Viola pitched two and a third of scoreless relief. She scattered three hits.

Marist had six hits in game two. Giordano had one, extending her hitting streak to eight games. Paluba, Young, Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.), Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.), and Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) had the other Marist hits.

Pomes and Giordano turned a double play in each game.

The Red Foxes will travel to Philadelphia to play Drexel on Sunday. Game one will begin at 11 a.m.
