STORRS, Conn.- The Marist softball team split a doubleheader with Central Connecticut State University played at UConn on Thursday afternoon. Senior's Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the way in a 5-1 win in the opener, but the Red Foxes fell 2-0 in the nightcap.

After both teams went down in order in the first, Marist (12-19, 0-1 MAAC) threatened in the top of the second. With one out, senior Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was able to reach on an error. Catenacci followed with a single to put runners on first and second, but Central starter Rachel Brenneman was able to put down the next two Marist batters to end the threat.

The Red Foxes were able to break the scoreless tie in the third. Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) led off with a single to right field, and the junior advanced to third on an outfield error. Fellow junior Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) followed with a groundout to bring in Pomes, and the Red Foxes had a 1-0 lead.

After another groundout, Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) reached on another Central error, and Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) followed with a laser to deep center for an RBI double and a 2-0 Marist lead.

Rigos retired the Blue Devils in order in the bottom of the second, and Marist went back to work at the plate in their half of the third. Catenacci led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.). She came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Alanna Woody (Clinton, Corners, N.Y.), and the Red Foxes held a 3-0 advantage.

Rigos continued to roll and the Marist bats were able to add to their lead in the seventh. Pomes led off with a gorgeous bunt single to set the table. After a fly out, Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) singled to put runners on first and second. Brenneman was able to get the second out with a strikeout, but Green laced a grounder to short that was fielded cleanly but thrown away. Pomes and Malloy were able to score on the Central error to give the Red Foxes a 5-0 lead.

Rigos allowed a run in the seventh on two infield singles but was brilliant throughout. It was her 13 complete game of the year, and she improved her record to 9-9. She struck out seven and gave up five hits.

Green, Catenacci, and Pomes all had two hits in the win, and Marist out-hit the Blue Devils 8-5.

Erin Kelley went 2-for-3 to lead Central at the plate.

In game two, Marist starter Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) pitched well enough to win. The junior went the distance and allowed two runs (one earned). She struck out four and gave up five hits over her six innings of work.

Both Central Connecticut (8-14) runs came in the second as Melissa Caron led off with a walk and was driven in by Kim Munson who doubled. Erica Koehler then knocked in Muson with a single.

The Red Foxes had several scoring chances in the second game, but the big hit eluded them. They had five hits. De la Llave, Green, Catenaci, Castellano, and Pomes had a hit apiece.

Liz Montemurro (3-2) shined in the circle for Central Connecticut. She tossed a complete game with three strikeouts and no walks.

Carpentier was the hard-luck loser. She falls to 2-6.

Marist will return to conference play with a doubleheader at Siena on Sunday. Game one is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
