VILLANOVA, PA. - The Marist women's water polo team remained perfect in MAAC Water Polo League play on Saturday, defeating Wagner 16-7 and St. Francis (N.Y.) 12-8 at Villanova. Samantha Swartz (Harleyville, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with nine goals in the two wins, with junior Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) adding six goals.
The Red Foxes opened the day with a 16-7 win over the defending MAAC Tournament champions from Wagner. Marist scored five goals in both the first and second quarters to take a 10-5 lead at halftime. The defense for the Red Foxes shut down the Seahawks in the second half. Marist held Wagner to two goals in the second half as they scored four in the fourth quarter to put away the Seahawks. Swartz had four goals for Marist, with McCahill and sophomore Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) each tallying three goals. Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) scored two goals and had a team-high two assists. Senior goalie Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.), the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, made 10 saves and had three steals.
In the nightcap Marist completed the season sweep of St. Francis (N.Y.), defeating the Terriers 12-8. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, and held St. Francis (N.Y.) to one goal in the second to take a 6-3 lead at halftime. Marist jumped on the Terriers in the third quarter, scoring four goals in taking a 10-5 lead. Just as she did in the first game of the day, Swartz led Marist in scoring with five goals. McCahill added three scores, with Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.), Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.), Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.), and Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) each adding a tally. Davis made 15 saves for the Red Foxes.
Marist (21-7, 6-0 MAAC) returns to action next Saturday when the Red Foxes take on Villanova and Siena at St. Francis (N.Y.).
