Game Two Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- Senior Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) walked with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to give Marist a 2-1, walk off win in the second game of a doubleheader versus Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Canisius on Sunday. The Red Foxes were on the wrong end of a 2-1 score in the opener. Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) homered for the Red Foxes' first run of game two, and fellow junior Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) scored the game-winning run after singling to lead off the eighth inning.
Marist was held to one hit in the opener, and it came from their first batter of the game. Junior Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) started things off with a single to right field. Green and Castellano walked with one out to load the bases, and freshman Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) grounded out to bring in Giordano. Canisius second baseman Katie Miranto made a fantastic play on Malloy's grounder.
Marist starter Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Canisius starter Juliette Bowers cruised until the top of the sixth. Jenny Maheu ripped a one out single down the left field line and was sacrificed to second. Katie Miranto then hit a grounder and looked to be retired 6-to-3. However, Castellano was ruled off first base because of a high throw, and Maheu came around to score from second on the play.
The Red Foxes were retired in order in their half of the sixth, and the Golden Griffins got the game-winner in the seventh. Rigos retired the first two Canisius (30-12, 11-1 MAAC) batters but then gave up a double to Emily Helbig. Pinch runner Paige Freiberger advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an Ashley Bonetto single.
The Red Foxes went quietly in their half of the seventh.
Rigos took the loss. The senior struck out eight and scattered six hits. Bowers improved to 15-1 on the year for the Griffs, and Mallory Aldred was credited with her 13th save.
In game two, Canisius jumped out in front by scoring one in the first thanks to two Marist errors and no hits.
Marist was struggling mightily at the plate until Green came through with a bomb to left center. It was the Red Foxes' first hit of the second game and first hit in 9.2 innings overall. It was her team-high, fifth homer of the season.
Starter Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) was fantastic for Marist. She went the first six-plus innings and gave up only one hit. She had a no-hitter going through six, but gave up a lead off double to Maheu in the seventh.
Rigos came on in relief after the double and slammed the door in the seventh. She also tossed a scoreless eighth and was credited with the win.
In the Red Foxes' eighth, Pomes laced a single up the middle to set the table. Giordano then reached on a Canisius error, and senior Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) advanced the runners with a ground out. After an intentional walk to Green to fill up the bases, Aldred walked in the game winner.
Lindsay Morris started for Canisius and went the first six.
Marist finished game two with four hits. Giordano, and Pomes had one each, and Green had two. It was the eighth time the Red Foxes were victorious in a one-run game.
"Our pitching was great all day, and my juniors really stepped up in that second game," said Marist Head Coach Erin Layton.
Marist will head to Fairfield on Tuesday to finish a halted game from earlier in the season. They will then host Manhattan and Saint Peter's in a pair of MAAC doubleheaders next weekend.
