Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Marist softball team fell 8-0 to Canisius in the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at Alumni Softball Field on the campus of Fairfield University. Michelle Fridey delivered a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the first inning and the Golden Griffins never looked back. It is their second straight MAAC Championship.
Fridey's homer came after a triple to left center off the bat of Katie Miranto.
Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) singled to lead off the Marist second but was stranded by Canisius starter Juliette Bowers.
Marist starter Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got through the second but was roughed up and knocked out of the game in the third. Lauren Hope singled with one out and Miranto followed with a single of her own. Fridey walked to load the bases and Cameron Norton delivered a back-breaking two-run single. Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) relieved Rigos at that point and got out of the inning with only one more run crossing the plate and Canisius holding a 5-0 lead.
Bowers was dominant for the Griffs. She went the first six innings, allowed just one hit, and struck out six. Mallory Aldred came on in relief to pitch a 1-2-3 seventh.
Marist's only real scoring chance came in the fourth when Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) and Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) walked to lead off the inning, but the Red Foxes could not capitalize.
Canisius added three runs in their fourth for the final margin.
Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.), Rigos, and Malloy were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Katie Miranto of Canisius was the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer.
The Red Foxes finish the season at 24-30 and Canisius heads to the NCAA Tournament at 38-12.
Marist College and the Department of Athletics would like to wish seniors Megan Rigos the best in their future endeavors and appreciates all their contributions over the last four years.
