POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team had its five-match winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, losing to Iona 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21) at the McCann Center. 1,212 fans attended Sunday's match, setting the record for the largest crowd for a Marist home volleyball match. During the match, junior middle blocker Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) tied the Marist career service aces record with her 168th and junior outside hitter Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) tallied the 1,000th kill of her career.
Schmid ended the match with 13 kills, two blocks, and one service ace, hitting .345 for the match. Foss had a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs. Senior Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led the Red Foxes with 14 kills. Libero Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) had 23 digs, one shy of tying her career-high.
Marist (15-10, 9-5 MAAC) took a quick 5-3 lead to start the match, getting two kills each from Schmid and Schultze. The Red Foxes then grew their lead to three at 8-5 on a block by Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) and Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.). Iona then went on a 4-0 run highlighted by two Rachel Whitten kills to go ahead 9-8. After a Burton kill tied the set at 9-9, the Gaels went on a 7-1 run capped off with a Whitten service ace to take a 16-10 lead. Iona led 18-13 when a Schultze kill sparked a 5-0 run that tied the set at 18-18. Marist went ahead 20-19 on an Iona error, but the Gaels took the next five points to go ahead 24-19. The Red Foxes fought off one set point with a Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) kill, but Molly O'Shea put down a kill to give Iona a 25-21 win in the first set.
The Red Foxes came out on fire in the second set, going ahead 6-0 on three Schmid kills. Iona came back and got within two at 8-6 on kills by O'Shea, Colleen Genett, and Sarah Wiener. Marist went ahead 11-7 on a Foss kill, following which the Gaels went on a 3-0 run to get within one at 11-10. An Estes kill, followed by two Schmid kills, helped get Marist back up by four, 14-10. Marist led all the way until 22-21 when Alyssa Erickson tallied a solo block to tie the set at 22-22. With the set tied at 23-23, Schmid and Foss hit back-to-back kills to give Marist the second set win 25-23.
Iona (9-15, 6-8 MAAC) controlled the early part of the third set, going ahead 6-3 on a Wiener service ace. The Gaels grew their lead to four at 13-9 on another Wiener ace. Marist then got kills from Foss, Schmid, and Schultze to get within one at 16-15. Wiener then hit a kill that started a 5-0 run to put Iona ahead 21-15. Iona lengthened its run to 9-2 to win the set 25-17, getting a kill from Theresa Harvey on set point. Iona hit .444 for the set and held Marist to a .118 hitting mark.
The Gaels took a fast 8-2 lead to start the fourth set, getting three blocks from Erickson and two from O'Shea. Marist used a Schmid service ace and a Burton kill to get within four at 10-6. The Red Foxes got within two at 14-12 on kills by Foss and Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.). Marist eventually tied the set at 17-17 on Hanna Stoiberg's (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) lone kill of the match. With the set tied at 19-19, Iona went on a 4-0 run highlighted by a block by Erickson and O'Shea to go ahead 23-19. Marist got back within two at 23-21 on kills by Schultze and Schimd, but Iona would take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1 on an Erickson kill and a Marist error.
Iona hit .283 for the match while Marist hit only .123. Marist held a 6-57 edge in digs while the Gaels dominated the net, recording 16 blocks to the Red Foxes' five. Whitten led Iona with 14 kills while Wiener added 13. O'Shea had eight kills and was in on a match-high 12 blocks. Libero Allison Nieters led the Gaels with 14 digs.
Sunday's match was the final event of "A Rae of Hope", a project put on by four Marist seniors, including setter Dawn Jan to raise money and awareness for research in the fight against osteosarcoma. This project holds special meaning for the Marist volleyball team, as junior Raeanna Gutkowski is currently battling osteosarcoma. Through donations and raffles Sunday, "A Rae of Hope" raised over $3,000 at Sunday's match.
Marist will play its final two home matches of the 2009 season next weekend, starting on Saturday, Nov. 7 when the Red Foxes host Niagara at the McCann Center at 2 p.m.
