Marist Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Top-Seed Fairfield In 2009 MAAC Volleyball Tournament Semifinals

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Trailing two sets to one to top-seeded Fairfield in the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament semifinals, the Marist volleyball team hit .293 in the final two sets to win the match 3-2 (21-25, 25-13, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11) and advance to its first MAAC Championship final at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo. Junior outside hitter Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) led all players with 17 kills and also had nine digs.

Senior Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) had 16 kills and seven digs, hitting .277 for the match. Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) added 12 kills. Defensively, libero Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with 18 digs as Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) led all players with seven blocks.

Marist (18-12) took control of the first set early, taking a 5-2 lead on kills by Foss and Schmid. Fairfield came back to take a 6-5 lead on an ace by Haililani Pokipala and a Katie Mann kill. With the set tied at 8-8, the Stags went on a 7-2 run capped off by an Alex Ferraco kill to go ahead 15-10. Fairfield led 16-11 when Marist used a Stags error to run off seven straight points to take an 18-16 lead. Schmid had two kills during the run as Schultze chipped in a service ace. After a Marist error made the score 18-17, Fairfield used a Lauren Hughes kill to power a 4-0 run of its own to go ahead 21-18. Marist would only get as close as two the rest of the way, as the Stags took the first set 25-21.

The Red Foxes never trailed in the second set, taking the first four points. Marist grew its lead to five at 10-5 on a Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) kill. Fairfield got within two at 10-8 on a kill by Ferraco, but a Burton kill sparked a three-point run for the Red Foxes to get the score to 13-8. After a Brianna Dixion kill put the Stags within four at 13-9, Marist took the next six points to take a 10-point lead, 19-9. Burton was in on two blocks during the run. Marist took the set 25-13, getting an ace from Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and kills by Schmid and Schultze on the last three points to even the match at one set each.

Fairfield (19-12) played its best volleyball of the match in the third set, hitting .458 for the set. Marist led early 6-4, but the Stags went on a 7-0 run powered by three Hughes kills to go ahead 11-6. Marist would get within three at 13-10 on a Schultze kill. Fairfield got the lead back up to five at 17-12 on a solo block by Mann. Marist would only get as close as four the rest of the way, as the Stags won the set 25-19.

The Stags kept the momentum rolling into the fourth set, taking a 5-2 lead on a Mann ace. Marist tied the set at 5-5 on a Foss kill and Schmid ace. Fairfield led 6-5 when a Harridsleff kill started a three-point run for the Red Foxes, putting them ahead 8-6. With the set tied 9-9, Marist got back-to-back kills by Schultze to go ahead 11-9. The Stags then tied the set at 11-11 on a Dixion kill and an ace by Kara Reis. The set was tied 13-13 when Fairfield got a block by Pokipala and Mann to take the lead 14-13. The lead grew to four at 18-14 on a Mann ace.

After a Fairfield error made the score 18-15, the Red Foxes ran off six straight points to go ahead 21-18. Burton was in on two blocks, including one solo, during the run as Foss added two kills. Fairfield came back to tie the set at 21-21 on a kill and an ace by Lauren Balmert, as well as a Marist error. The two teams then traded points until 23-23, when Schultze put down a kill to give the Red Foxes set point at 24-23. Stoiberg and Schmid then recorded a block on the next point to give Marist the set 25-23 and force a deciding fifth set.

Marist took a commanding 3-0 lead to start the fifth set, getting kills from Foss and Harridsleff. The Red Foxes then took a four-point lead, 6-2, on two more Foss kills and a Schultze kil. Fairfield took the next three points on a Balmert kill, as well as a block by Ferraco and Balmert, to make the score 6-5. Marist went ahead 8-5 on kills by Foss and Schultze. The Stags got within two at 9-7 on a Hughes kill. Harridsleff responded with a kill of her own to make the score 10-7. After a Fairfield error, Schmid put down a kill to make the score 12-7. After a Stags error made the score 13-7 in favor of Marist, Dixion put down a kill to get Fairfield within five, 13-8. Marist then committed three straight errors to make the score 13-11. Harridsleff then put down another kill to put Marist back on serve for match point, 14-11. With Schmid serving, Fairfield was unable to keep the match alive, as Marist won the fifth set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

The Red Foxes hit .333 in the fourth set, and .318 in the fifth set. Overall, Marist hit .260 for the match and held Fairfield to a .201 mark. The Red Foxes also held a 9-6 advantage in blocks as each team had 54 digs. Mann led the Stags with 14 kills, hitting 448 for the match. Hughes added 13 kills as Reis led all players with 22 digs.

Marist will take on the winner of the second semifinal between #2 Niagara and #3 Siena Monday night at 7:30 p.m. for the MAAC Tournament Championship. The match will be televised on ESPNU.
