POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Members of nine Marist athletics teams participated in the 2009 Hunger Walk on Wednesday afternoon on the Hudson River Valley campus. The event is one of five during the month of November, which are all run by the Marist Campus Ministry. The programs that participated included women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, women's cross country and track and field, women's tennis, football and men's and women's lacrosse. Over 400 people participated in the event.
Alyssa Gates, Director of the Student-Athlete Enhancement Center, said she was happy to see such a strong turnout from the Marist student-athletes.
"I was proud to see the number of student-athletes participate in the Hunger Walk as it relates to a larger series of events on campus," she said. "I applaud the Marist coaches and administrators for setting a positive example, and demonstrating the importance of this event."
Marist Campus Ministry, the largest club on campus with over 1,000 members, takes the lead on Hunger Awareness Month in November each year. The group puts on five events during the eleventh calendar month which include today's hunger run/walk, Buck Hunger Days, Marist Fast and a Hunger Awareness Banquet.
