SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The Marist water polo team earned its first win of the 2009 season on Saturday as it split its first two games at the UC-San Diego Triton Invitational. The Red Foxes fell to the host Tritons, currently #19 in the country, 12-6 before beating Redlands later in the day 15-9. Junior utility Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) had five goals in Marist's win over Redlands with sophomore Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) adding four goals.
In the first game of the day, the Red Foxes found themselves behind 3-0 to UC-San Diego. Marist was behind 5-0 before Pauli found the back of the net with 4:25 to go in the second quarter. The Tritons put two more goals on the board before Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) gave Marist its second goal of the game, making the halftime score 7-2. UC-San Diego outscored Marist 2-1 in the third quarter to go ahead 9-3. The Red Foxes got three goals in the fourth quarter from Pauli and Colleen Lischwe (Kirkwood, Mo.) but it would not be enough as the Tritons also scored three times in the final period to win 12-6.
Marist (1-2) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the nightcap against Redlands as Sunday, Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas), and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) all tallied goals. The Red Foxes were ahead 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and added three more goals in the second quarter to take an 8-5 lead. Pauli then scored three of Marist's four goals in the third quarter to push the lead to six, 12-9. Marist added three goals in the fourth to win 15-9. Goalies Madison Weber (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) combined for eight saves in the win.
The Red Foxes will play two more games Sunday at the UC-San Diego Triton Invitational.
