SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - For the second straight day, the Marist water polo team split two matches at the Triton Invitational, held at UC-San Diego. The Red Foxes opened the day with a 13-8 loss to #14 Hartwick before defeating Santa Clara 14-6. Junior Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) had seven goals in the two games, six of them coming in the Santa Clara game.
Marist (2-3) fell behind early against the #14 Hawks, trailing 5-2 after the first quarter. Hartwick extended the lead to four at halftime, 8-4, and five at the end of three quarters, 12-7. Sophomore Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.), Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.), Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.), and Barnett also found the back of the net. Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) had eight saves in goal.
After leading 2-1 after the first quarter against Santa Clara, Marist put five goals on the board in the second to lead 7-3 at halftime. Ahead 10-4 after the third quarter, the Red Foxes added four more goals to win 14-6. Swartz, Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Colleen Lischwe (Kirkwood, Mo.) each had two goals to go with Barnett's six. Rampton and Swartz each had four assists. Madison Weber (Walnut Creek, Calif.) had nine saves in the win.
The Red Foxes return to action on February 21 at the Princeton Invitational.
