JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - The Marist softball teamed wrapped up play at the Jacksonville Tournament with an 11-2 loss to the host Jacksonville Dolphins on Sunday afternoon. In their second game against Jacksonville this weekend, Marist was able to hang with Jacksonville for the first three innings, before the Dolphins pulled away scoring nine runs over the final two innings.
After Jacksonville plated two runs in the opening half inning, Marist (1-5) would respond with two runs of their own. Senior co-captain Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) got aboard with a bunt single. Pomes scored on a Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) double. Senior Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) roped a single up the middle that would score Giordano to tie the score at two. Freshman Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) singled for Marist's fourth consecutive hit. The Marist half of the first inning totaled two runs on five hits and the team sent eight batters to the plate.
Freshman pitcher Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) took the loss for Marist. She pitched for four innings and gave up eight earned runs, seven hits and eight walks.
Overall on the weekend, Green compiled a batting average of .533, with eight hits, four RBI, while starting all six games at either first base or in the outfield. She had three multi-hit games and ended the tournament on a three-game hitting streak
Giordano scored four runs for the Marist offense and has doubles in back-to-back games. She is also three-for-three in stolen base attempts. She had a hit over the past three games.
Marist will return to action on Friday, Mar. 6 at 3 p.m. when they will play in the Sixth Annual Dawg Pound Classic, hosted by UMBC. The team will play five games over the three-day weekend event.
