Box Score
BALTIMORE, MD. - Senior pitcher Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) threw her first career no-hitter in a 6-0 win over Hampton University in the softball team's first game at the UMBC Tournament. It was the first no-hitter thrown by a Marist pitcher since April 22, 2007 when Megan Rigos achieved the feat in a 8-0 win over Iona. Additionally, senior Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) tied the Marist record for RBI in a career as she drove in the fifth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Carpentier allowed just two runners to reach base as she retired the first 11 batters she faced. She totaled six ground outs and four strikeouts, with a fly out during the stretch. In total she had five whiffed five batters on the day. The ball only left the infield on one account in the third inning.
Green tied the career record for RBI with 117 as she drove in Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) on a double to right field.
Giordano led the game off with a single to the right side. She then stole her third base of the season. She was able to score on two wild pitches that advanced her to third and brought her home. Giordano scored two runs and went 2-for-3 at the plate. She was hit by a pitch as well
Marist scored three runs in the fourth to pad their 1-0 lead. Sophomore Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) led the inning off with a single. Two batters later, senior Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) reached base on a fielder's choice. Freshman Lindsay Durant (Martinsville, N.J.) doubled to right field and drove in both Malloy and Kinel. Durant would score before the inning was over as well, on a Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) single.
With the win Marist improved to 3-10 on the season, and the shutout was the second of the young year for the Red Foxes and Carpentier, as they won the season opener over Vermont, 4-0, in Jacksonville on Feb. 28.
Marist will look for its third straight win as they square off with UMBC at 2:30 p.m. in their second game of the UMBC Tournament.
