BALTIMORE, MD. - The Marist softball team finished the first day of the UMBC Tournament in a game against the host Retrievers on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes fell, 5-2, in a game where the Red Foxes out-hit their opponents 6-4.
Marist jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first on a run scored by senior co-captain Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.). She went 2-for-2 in the afternoon game with two runs scored and a walk. Giordano leads the Red Foxes in runs scored with 14 on the season.
The game took a turn into the favor of UMBC in the bottom half of the third as they scored three unearned runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Retrievers added a solo home run in the fifth inning to get their fifth run of the afternoon.
Freshman Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) threw a complete game in the circle for the Red Foxes. She gave up four hits, five runs and five walks over six innings pitched. On a positive note she struck out a season high five batters.
Marist will wrap-up play at the UMBC Tournament as they will face Hampton University at 10:30 a.m. and UMBC at 2:30 p.m.
