BALTIMORE, MD. - The Marist softball team dropped their final two games of the UMBC Tournament on Sunday to Hampton, 10-8, and to UMBC, 5-1. Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) scored a run in each game and has now totaled a run scored in five straight games.
In the first game of the day against Hampton, Marist jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Four of the runs came on a Durant grand slam to left field. It was Durant's first home run of the season. Earlier in the inning, Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) drove in Giordano on a fielders' choice to the shortstop.
In the Marist half of the third, the Red Foxes added three additional runs to make the score, 8-1. Durant drove in two more runs on a double to right center field. The shot scored Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) and Malloy. Green and Malloy each scored two runs.
The Hampton offense came to life in the fourth and fifth innings when they scored a total of seven runs. All of the runs came from the sixth through ninth spots in the Hampton batting order, while five of the runs were unearned.
Heather Viola (East Meadow, N.Y.) took the loss in game one as she came in relief of Green. Viola pitched 1.1 innings allowed three hits and four runs.
Later in the day, the Red Foxes squared off with the UMBC Retrievers, as they dropped a 5-1 decision. The Red Foxes totaled just two hits. UMBC used three runs in the second inning and one run in the third to get ahead on the Red Foxes for good.
Marist scored its lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.). The fly to right scored Giordano.
Marist will return Wednesday, March 18, at 2:30 p.m. when the Red Foxes take on the Temple Owls in Philadelphia, Pa.
