ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The Marist water polo team won both of its games Sunday at the Wolverine Invitational, defeating Gannon 13-5 and Siena 13-9. Senior Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) had hat tricks in both games for the Red Foxes as Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) each had four goals in the two games.
Marist (9-9) took care of business on Sunday morning against Gannon. After going ahead 2-1 after the first quarter, the Red Foxes outscored Gannon 3-0 to take a 5-1 halftime lead. Marist poured it on in the third quarter, scoring six times to go ahead 11-5 after the third quarter. The Red Foxes added two more goals in the fourth for the 13-5 win. McCahill had three goals in the win with Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.) adding two goals apiece. Rampton and Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) each had five steals to lead Marist's defense.
In its second game of the day, Marist took on MAAC rival Siena. The Red Foxes opened the game by taking a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Marist added four more goals in the second quarter to take an 8-5 halftime. In the third quarter, the Red Foxes put the game away with four goals to go ahead 12-6. McCahill, Barnett, and Swartz each scored three goals for Marist. Swartz also added four assists. Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) had 12 saves in the win.
Marist will play an exhibition game at Michigan State on Tuesday, March 17 before opening MAAC Water Polo League play on April 4.
