March 31, 2009

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist softball team continued its 10-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader with the Albany Great Danes. The Red Foxes dropped two one-run games, 6-5 in game one, and 2-1 in game two. Freshman Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) both hit home runs in the first game of the afternoon.

Senior Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) extended her hitting streak to eight games as she went 2-for-4 in game one and 1-for-3 in game two. She drove in the lone run in game two for Marist.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Great Danes led 2-0 in the top of the third when Lamoureux hit her first long ball of the season over the left field wall.

After Marist (9-17) starter Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.), Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) and Giordano all crossed the plate.

The highlight of the fourth was a two-run home run by Giordano, her second of the season. Through four innings of play, Marist held a 5-2 lead.

The Great Danes responded immediately, as they sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the fifth and scored three runs, which scored on five hits, including three singles and a two-run scoring double off the bat of Jessica Bergin, which scored Meagan Butsch and Kristine Bill. The score was knotted at five after five innings.

Albany scored the game-winner in the sixth when Michelle Connors drove in Bill to provide the visitors with the 6-5 lead for good.

In game two, Albany jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, and padded it to 2-0 in the fourth.

Giordano plated the lone Marist run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1 on a Green single to left field. After the fourth inning Marist had four more base runners, but none ever advanced further then second base.

Senior pitcher Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) took both losses on the day to fall to 5-9 on the season. Despite the losses she pitched 9.2 outstanding innings, as she struck out 15 of 30 batters faced and walked just one. Additionally, she only allowed one earned run all afternoon.

After an idle day on Wednesday, the Red Foxes will return to action on Thursday, April 2 when they host Columbia of the Ivy League for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
