BALTIMORE, MD. - The Marist softball team was outlasted by the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Terriers at the Sixth Annual Dawg Pound Classic on Friday afternoon. The final score favored the host Terriers, 4-3 on their home field.
The Red Foxes trailed 2-0 heading into the top half of the third. With two outs, senior Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) reached base on a walk. She advanced to third base when Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) hit the ball to center field and Juila Culotta committed an error, bringing Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) to the plate. Green then drove the ball over the left field fence, a three-run shot, and her first long ball of the season. The shot put Marist up 3-2 through 2.5 innings.
In the ensuing half inning, senior pitcher Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) struck out the side to preserve the lead into the fourth. Carpentier struck out nine of the 27 batters she faced on the afternoon. She threw a complete game in the loss for Marist.
UMBC sent 10 batters to the plate in their half of the fourth inning. Carpentier loaded the bases behind a single, double and intentional walk. Amanda Barker scored the game-winning run on a Marist throwing error and the home team added an insurance run on a Krista Kearns single.
With the loss Marist dropped to 0-1 in the round robin style tournament. The teams with the top two records will meet in the championship game, and the teams with the third and fourth best records will meet in a consolation matchup. Both games will be played on Sunday.
Marist will continue action at the Sixth Annual Dawg Pound Classic hosted by UMBC on Saturday morning when the take on Drexel at 9 a.m. Later in the day, the Red Foxes will play the Seton Hall Pirates, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
