POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Powered by nine hits from seven different players in game one, the Marist softball team snapped a seven-game losing streak on Senior Day at the Softball Park at Gartland Field, as the Red Foxes split a doubleheader with Siena. Marist won its first game of the day, 7-2, before dropping the back end of the twinbill 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. Senior Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) went 5-for-8 on the afternoon with her team-leading fifth home run of the season and three runs scored.
In game one, the Red Foxes scored runs in each of the first four innings as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and never looked back. In the bottom of the first, Giordano led the game off with a base hit through the right side of the infield. After a Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) drove in Giordano with a ground out to the shortstop. Green had two RBIs in game one.
Marist made the score 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) scored on a McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) single.
The Red Foxes' bats remained hot in the third inning as the squad put up three runs. Giordano led off the inning with a double to right centerfield. After a Lamoureux sacrifice, her second of the day, got Giordano to third base with one out, Siena starter Amanda Fillipazzo would walk Green and Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) then stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. She singled to center field to score Green, Malloy's seventh RBI this season. With two outs, Kinel then drove a double to right center field which scored both DiVirgilio and Malloy.
Siena scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but that would be all they could get out of Marist starter Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.). Jamie Piela drove in Olivia Calcagnini on a single down the left field line. Through four innings, Marist led 5-2.
The Red Foxes would add two insurance runs in the fourth. Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) scored on a passed ball, and Giordano scored on a Green ground out for the second time of the day.
In game one, Carpentier threw a complete game three-hitter to earn her seventh win of the 2009 season. She struck out 11 batters to increase her season total to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) best 139 strikeouts this season.
As a team, Marist totaled nine hits and three walks, while they stranded just four runners on base in the game.
In the night cap of the twinbill, Marist drew first blood, this time in the bottom of the third, as Giordano hit her fifth home run of the season. She now has 19 career home runs, good for a fifth place tie with Melissa Tucci. After the long ball, Marist led 1-0.
Siena would not go quietly in game two, as the Saints responded with a home run of their own in the next half inning. Lauren Weingart hit a two-run shot over the left field wall which scored Calcagnini to give Siena a 2-1 lead.
Marist was able to tie the game at two in the bottom of the fourth as Giordano drove in Campbell on an RBI single to left field.
Siena took the lead in the top of the fifth for good as they added two runs to take a 4-2 lead. Natasha Powlowsky scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch by Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). The Saints added an insurance run later in the inning. Kristen Borsella scored Jenny McNulty on an RBI single.
After the games, the Red Foxes moved to 4-4 in the MAAC, with eight conference games remaining this season.
