Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist softball team salvaged a split in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader with the Manhattan Jaspers at Gaelic Park on Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes dropped game one on a walk off home run, a 3-2 margin before picking up two seventh inning runs to lift Marist over Manhattan in game two, 5-3. Sophomore Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) each had three hits, while Green scored two runs in game two.
The potent two-run Marist seventh inning in game two broke a 3-3 tie. Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) drove in the final run of the day on a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Green.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Marist got on the board in the opening frame. Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) led the game off with a single up the middle. Back-to-back hits by Green and Malloy got Giordano to third base. DiVirgilio plated Giordano with a sacrifice fly to left field.
After the Jaspers responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead, the Red Foxes would respond right away with a run in the bottom of the second. Pomes led the inning off with a single. Pomes was brought around to score on a Lamoureux double to left center field.
Manhattan would take their final lead of the day in the bottom of the second, a 3-2 advantage. Donnelly scored her second run of the day on a Danielle Just base hit.
In the first game of the twinbill, the score was deadlocked at zero until Manhattan broke the scoring open in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Jaspers scored two runs on a double by Kara Cokeley.
Marist would tie the game in its last opportunity, the top of the seventh with two runs of their own. After sophomore Heather Young (Saugerties, N.Y.) led off the inning with a walk, Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) reached on a bunt single down the first base line to place runners on first and second with no outs. The Red Foxes would plate both of their runs on a throwing error by second baseman Erika Sullivan. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the score was tied at two.
The Lady Jaspers would end the game in the bottom of the seventh, when shortstop Melissa Donnelly led off the inning with a walk off home run to center field. The shot lifted Manhattan to a 3-2 game one victory.
In the circle for the Red Foxes, Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) took the loss in game one. She threw a complete game and gave up five hits, three earned runs, while she struck out five. In the second game, Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) earned her first career MAAC victory as she scattered six hits, gave up three earned runs and fanned five batters in seven innings, including two strike outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) had a solid day defensively in both games as she had a total of eight assists and two putouts from third base, including a number of key outs that put a halt to many Lady Jaspers' offensive threats.
Marist (12-28, 5-5 MAAC) will return to action on Saturday, April 18 when they face the Saint Peter's Peahens in a conference doubleheader on the road. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Jersey City.
