JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist softball team earned a crucial Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep at Saint Peter's on Saturday, as the Red Foxes prevailed by scores of 9-4 and 5-1. The wins improved the Red Foxes' record to 7-5, and put them in a virtual tie for second place in the conference with just two MAAC doubleheaders remaining.
Marist's offensive attack was led by senior first baseman Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) and senior shortstop Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.). Green went 6-for-9 on the day with four runs scored and four RBIs, while Giordano went 5-for-9 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Senior pitcher Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) pitched a complete game to earn the win in game two, and recorded the save in relief of winning pitcher Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) in the first game.
The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the second inning of game one on an RBI single by sophomore third baseman McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.). Giordano followed two batters later with a two-run double to give Marist a 3-0 lead.
After the Peahens cut the Red Foxes' lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the second, Marist exploded for four runs on five hits in the fourth. Green's two-run single scored both senior center fielder Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) and Giordano to give the Red Foxes a 5-1 lead. Marist would add two more runs in the inning on an RBI single by freshman catcher Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.).
Marist scored twice more in the sixth on an RBI double by sophomore left fielder Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) and an RBI single by Kinel to take a 9-2 lead.
The Red Foxes led 9-3 entering the seventh, but the Peahens mounted a rally. With one run already in and the bases loaded with two outs, Carpentier came on in relief of Schell to strike out the final batter of the game and preserve the Red Foxes' 9-4 triumph.
Schell, who scattered seven hits in 6.2 innings, improved to 5-11. The save for Carpentier was her fourth.
The Red Foxes started game two with a flurry as Giordano led off the game with a single through the right side. She then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single to right field by Green.
In the third, Giordano's team-leading sixth home run of the season gave the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead. An RBI single by Malloy, which drove in Green, put Marist up 3-0. The Red Foxes made the score 4-0 an inning later when Giordano's RBI single drove in sophomore center fielder Heather Young (Saugerties, N.Y.).
The Peahens cut Marist's lead to 4-1 in the fourth, but Marist added an insurance run in the seventh on a home run by Green, her fifth of the season.
Carpentier improved to 8-13 as she tossed her 14th complete game of the season. She scattered eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 10.
Marist will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Rutgers, which begins at 3 p.m. The Red Foxes will conclude MAAC play next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders in western New York, as the Red Foxes will take on Niagara next Saturday and Canisius next Sunday.
