NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team moved to 3-1 in MAAC Water Polo League play on Sunday with wins over Siena and Villanova at Iona. The Red Foxes defeated Siena 13-7 in the morning before taking down the Wildcats 16-8. Junior Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) had a hat trick in each game for Marist.
Marist (12-10, 3-1 MAAC) and Siena scored two goals each in the first and second quarters, playing to a 4-4 halftime tie. The Red Foxes took control of the game in the third quarter, scoring six times to take a 10-5 lead. Marist added three more goals in the fourth quarter to win 13-7. Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) also had a hat trick for the Red Foxes against Siena. Barnett led Marist with four assists as Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) had three helpers. Goalie Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) led the Marist defense with nine saves and three steals.
After playing to a 4-4 tie after the first quarter against Villanova in their second game of the day, Marist outscored the Wildcats 3-0 in the second to take a 7-3 halftime lead. Marist then added five goals in the third quarter to take a 12-6 lead, and scored four more times in the final quarter for the 16-8 win. Barnett, Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.), and Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) each had three goals in the game, with Swartz adding five assists and four steals.
Marist will go on the road Wednesday night to take on nationally-ranked Hartwick for an 8 p.m. game.
