Roge Nesbitt Announces Addition Of Boas And Sun To Women's Tennis Team

May 15, 2009

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist women's tennis coach Roge Nesbitt has announced the signing of two players to join the team in the fall of 2009. Julianna Vilas Boas and Joana Sun will be added to the Red Foxes roster next semester.

JULIANA BOAS - CURITIBA, BRAZIL / SEWARD CC

Boas will join the Red Foxes as a junior next season as a junior college transfer. She played no. 2 singles and doubles at Seward. Each of the last two seasons she played in the National Tournament. This past season she finished fourth in both singles and doubles in the Region VI Tournament. Prior to her arrival in the states, she was ranked no. 18 in Brazil. In 2007, she won four tournament titles in Brazil.

Coach Nesbitt on Boas: "Juliana will bring to the Marist Red Foxes women's tennis team a great ingredient: experience. She has been playing on the Junior College level for two years and that is of great value to our young team. We are going to have a few different faces on our team come fall and we look forward to Juliana's help in making the team even stronger."

JOANA SUN - GALES FERRY, CONN. / LEDYARD

Sun will join the Marist women's tennis team with a perfect 32-0 mark at no.1 singles at Ledyard High School in Connecticut. Individually, she reached the state tournament semifinals as a junior in 2008, while her team won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Championship. As a tournament player in the USTA, Sun has ranked as high as no. 7 in the girls' 16-and-under and as high as no. 14 in the girls 18-and-under. She is also a member of the National Honor Society at Ledyard.

Coach Nesbitt on Sun: "Joana is a three star player with a USTA ranking of 14 in the New England section. I have watched her climb the rankings nicely since the fall of 2008. She will fill some top spots in our tennis program. Along with some great tennis skills Joana is a very strong academic student. We believe she and Marist will be a great fit."

The Red Foxes finished fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in 2009 and will return four singles starters to the lineup next fall.
