NEW YORK CITY - After suffering a 3-0 (15-25, 21-25, 19-25) defeat to Stony Brook Saturday morning, the Marist volleyball team defeated Quinnipiac 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 to split its two matches at the Columbia Invitational. Senior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led the Red Foxes with 17 kills against Quinnipiac, while she and Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) each had 10 kills against Stony Brook.
Marist (6-5) got off to a good start against Stony Brook, going ahead 5-1 early on kills by Schultze, Lindsey Schmid (Austin,Texas), and Lindsey O'Dell (Kingwood, Texas). The Seawolves eventually tied the set at 11-11 and went ahead 12-11 on a Marist error. Trailing 14-13, the Red Foxes tied the set at 14-14 on a Foss kill. Stony Brook used a Lindsey Gordon kill as the catalyst for a four-point run, taking an 18-14 lead. After a Foss kill made the score 18-15, the Seawolves won the last seven points to win the set 25-15.
Stony Brook took a quick 6-1 lead to open the second set, and held that lead for a majority of the set. Marist closed to within four at 12-8, getting a block from Schmid and Schultze. The Seawolves grew their lead back up to seven at 15-8 on a kill by Lisa Doremus. Ahead 16-10, Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 21-10. The Seawolves won the set 25-15 on a kill by Harmonie Calinda.
The Seawolves took an 11-4 lead in the third set, and held that lead for a majority of the set. Marist got as close as six a couple times, but Stony Brook hit a match-high .406 in the third set to win it 25-19. Stony Brook hit .292 for the match, holding Marist to a .130 mark. Foss and Schultze each had 10 kills for the Red Foxes, as Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) had a match-high 19 digs.
The Red Foxes opened its afternoon match against Quinnipiac by winning eight of the first 12 points, getting four Schultze kills and two Schmid kills. The Bobcats got within two at 9-7, but Marist took eight of the next nine points to go ahead 17-8. Marist hit .405 in the opening set and won it 25-19, as kills by Foss and Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) clinched the set.
Marist's hitting would improve in the second set. The two teams played to a 6-6 tie to start the set. The Red Foxes broke away and took a two-point lead at 8-6 on an O'Dell kill. A Taylor Payne kill made the score 8-7, after which a Burton kill sparked a 6-1 run for Marist and a 15-8 lead. Schultze had three kills during the run. Marist hit .552 in the second set and held the Bobcats to a .112 mark. The Red Foxes won the set 25-15 on a Foss kill.
It was Marist's defense that stood out in the third set, as Quinnipiac had only five kills and hit a .000 for the set. The Bobcats led the set 7-6 when a Burton kill started an 8-1 run that put Marist ahead 15-8. The Red Foxes grew their lead to eight at 17-9 on a Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) service ace. Marist won the set 25-17 to clinch the sweep, getting kills by Schmid and Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas) to end the match.
Marist hit .388 for the match against Quinnipiac, holding the Bobcats to .167. Foss had 10 kills to compliment Schultze's 17 and hit .562 for the match. Schmid added nine kills and hit .467. Burton had six kills on nine attempts with no errors and added a solo block.
The Red Foxes open the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the McCann Center against Saint Peter's. First serve is at 2 p.m.
