WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team competed at the 2009 Eastern Championships, hosted by Army from Friday, Sept. 25 - Sunday, Sept. 27. Freshman Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) reached the backdraw finals in the second flight. Poor weather conditions forced play indoors on Sunday.
Raynor dropped the finals matchup to Ana Mungro of Duquesne, 8-2.
On Friday, Raynor defeated Nakita Austin of St. John's, 8-5. The win put her into the quarterfinals of the backdraw. In the first singles draw, Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State, Brazil) got to the semifinals of the backdraw. She advanced due to a walkover.
In doubles action, Joana Macaluso (Stormville, N.Y.) and Juilana Boras (Curitiba, Brazil) defeated Riley Archer and Eileen Horgan. The Marist pair won 8-3 to advance to the backdraw quarterfinals. The two fell to Tanisha Hodgson and Jocelyn Providence, 8-2.
On Saturday, Raynor defeated Emily Herb of Connecticut 8-6 in the semifinals.
On Sunday, Marist collected a singles win from Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.). She defeated Brittany Maddock of Providence, 8-2.
Marist will return to action on Oct. 10-11 when it hosts the Marist Invitational. Play is slated to begin on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
