NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Marist men's tennis team won three matches on Friday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional at Yale University. The Red Foxes got wins from seniors Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and the doubles team of junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada). All the victories were in first round action.
Pisecky won his first round match in the Round of 128 over Tripp Johnson of Army. In a three set match, Pisecky won the first and third sets. The score was 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-4. In the Round of 64, Pisecky is slated to face 13th-seeded Hicham Laalej of Pennsylvania.
Greene coasted through his first round match in straight sets. He defeated Brown's Tim Klanke 6-4, 7-5. Greene will face Alexandre Haggai of Binghamton in the Round of 64.
Reznek, Himmelsbach and junior Chris Foster (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were all eliminated in first round action on Friday. Reznek was a late entry into the main draw, and coined the "lucky loser." Since a player withdrew from the main draw, tournament officials selected one loser from the qualifying round to enter the main draw. Reznek was selected.
In doubles action, Himmelsbach and Reznek advanced to the Round of 32 with an 8-2 victory over Hofstra's Antonio Pena and Jon Disley. The Marist tandem will face Michael Laser and Xander Centenari of Dartmouth.
Marist will continue play at the ITA Northeast Regional Championship on Saturday. The tournament will feature action in the second round of the singles and doubles draws.
