NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Marist men's tennis team opened its weekend with a 5-2 victory over Stony Brook at Yale on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes swept the doubles point and picked up four other singles victories to win the match. Senior Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) defeated Ivan Rummel, who is ranked 18th in the Northeast at first singles.
Coley, who is ranked 20th in the ITA Northeast region, picked up a victory in straight sets over Rummel, 6-2, 7-5. His last two victories have come in straight sets as he defeated his first regionally ranked opponent of the season. He is now 1-2 in matches against regionally ranked foes.
At second singles, senior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and sophomore Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) notched victories at fourth and sixth singles respectively.
The Red Foxes swept the doubles point from Stony Brook. Himmelsbach and Coley teamed up at first doubles to defeat Rummel and Kailaheimo, 8-2. Freshman Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) and Pisecky squeezed past Mitch Wong and Palesh Tiwari, 9-7, while Sessagesimi and junior Landon Greene (Palos Verde, Calif.) bested Ilan Shvartz and Max Sztabholz 8-5.
Marist will continue play at Yale on Sunday at 9 a.m. The Red Foxes will wrap up a dual match with the host Bulldogs and face-off with Fairleigh Dickinson.
