Women's Swimming & Diving Wins Second ECAC Championship

PITTSBURGH, PA. - After it won its 11th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship last weekend, the Marist women's swimming and diving team won the 2010 ECAC Championship on Sunday at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh. The Red Foxes won their second ECAC crown and first since 2006 as they scored 503.5 points over three days. Marist held off Harvard for an 11.5-point victory in the meet.

The Red Foxes had two top-eight finishers in two events on Sunday - the 1,650-yd. freestyle and the 200-yd. breaststroke. Senior Emily Hammang (Barrington, R.I.) notched a fifth place finish in the 1,650-yd. freestyle with a time of 17:23.40, while sophomore Emily Gardner (Fairport, N.Y.) took eighth place with a time of 17:43.07.

Freshman Chelsea Unger (Marlboro, N.J.) who finished seventh with a mark of 2:22.64.

In the final event of the championship, the 400-yd. freestyle relay, the Red Foxes claimed fourth place to hold onto the title. Sophomores Caroline Skjong-Nilsen (Palmetto Bay, Fla.), Unger and freshman Kate Conard (East Setauket, N.Y.) finished with a time of 3:29.90.

Additionally, Larry VanWagner was named ECAC Coach of the Meet.

Marist has now claimed the ECAC and MAAC Championships in two seasons - 2006 and 2010. The Red Foxes conclude the 2010 season with a dual meet record of 8-4.
