NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Marist men's tennis team split a pair of matches with Yale and Fairleigh Dickinson on the campus of Yale University on Sunday. The Red Foxes opened the day with a 5-2 defeat against Yale, but rebounded nicely with a shutout 7-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Sophomore Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) won all three of his singles matches after he picked up two triumphs on Sunday.
Himmelsbach defeated Connor Dawson of Yale 6-4, 6-4 at fifth singles. In his fourth singles match against Fairleigh Dickinson's Ted Sagefors, Himmelsbach cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The Red Foxes got a sixth singles victory against Yale from junior Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany). Von Nordheim defeated Jordan Abergel 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
In Marist's sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson, seniors Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Loic Sessagesimi (Blonay, Switzerland) notched identical victories at first and second singles respectively. Coley defeated Peter Skuarka, while Ibrham Shams fell victim to Sessagesimi. Their scores were 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
Junior Landon Greene (Palos Verde, Calif.) defeated Andrew Denny at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-0. Von Nordheim picked up his second sixth singles victory of the day against Marco Jemersic, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles action against FDU, Colley and Himmelsbach bested Skuarka and Jemersic 8-5, while Sessagesimi and Greene prevailed over Denny and Guy Goren, 8-4.
Marist returns to the courts on Wednesday, March 3 as the team will travel to Saint Peter's for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dual match. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
