SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The Marist Water Polo team opened its 2010 season Friday at #8 San Diego State, falling 15-5 at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Red Foxes trailed 2-1 early in the first quarter, but three straight Aztec goals gave San Diego State a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) each had a pair of goals for the Red Foxes.
After the Aztecs took their 5-1 lead in the first quarter, Swartz scored the first goal of the second quarter to make the score 5-2 with 3:30 left in the half. San Diego State (4-1) then scored two more goals to end the half, taking a 7-2 lead. The Aztecs grew the lead to 9-2 with two more goals in the second half. Marist (0-1) got back on the board in the fourth quarter, as Swartz's second goal made the score 8-3. San Diego State then scored the next five goals to make the score 13-3 and put the game out of reach for the Red Foxes.
Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made eight saves in goal for Marist while Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) had two assists. Jenna Natalizio led the Aztecs with three goals.
Marist will play two games in the UC-San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday. They open with #12 Cal State Northridge at 12:50 p.m.
