LA JOLLA, CALIF. - The Marist Water Polo team moved to 0-3 on the young 2010 season, falling 11-7 to #12 Cal State Northridge and 8-4 to UC-San Diego Saturday at the Triton Invitational. Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with three goals against Cal State Northridge while Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) had three tallies against UC-San Diego.
In its first game of the day, Marist got behind 3-1 after the first quarter. The Red Foxes went scoreless in the next two quarters, allowing the Matadors to grow their lead to 9-1 after the third quarter. Marist then exploded for six goals in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late. Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) had two goals and an assist for Marist. Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) and Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made seven saves in goal.
Marist then took on host UC-San Diego in its second game Saturday. The Red Foxes hung with the Tritons in the first quarter, trailing 2-1 after the first quarter. Much like the first game, the second quarter was Marist's downfall. UC-San Diego outscored the Red Foxes 5-1 in the second quarter to take a 7-1 lead at halftime. The Red Foxes outscored the Tritons 2-1 in the second half to make the final score 8-4. Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.) added a goal to Pauli's three. Rampton had two assists and two steals. Getchius made seven saves.
The Red Foxes will play two more games at the Triton Invitational on Sunday, beginning with an 11 a.m. contest against either Cal State Bakersfield or Redlands.
