RIVERSIDE, CALIF. - The Marist water polo team split games with the Colorado State Rams and Cal Baptist Lancers Monday in Riverside, Calif. The Red Foxes defeated the Rams 12-6 before a 12-8 loss to the Lancers. Senior Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) had five goals and two assists in the two games, with Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) adding four goals and and two assists.
The Red Foxes got off to a hot start against Colorado State, taking a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Marist led 6-2 at halftime, with the Rams making a comeback in the third quarter. Colorado State scored three times in the third to make the score 8-5, but the Red Foxes scored four goals in the final quarter to win the game 12-6. Swartz, Rampton, Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas), and Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) each had two goals for Marist. Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had a team-high three assists. Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made nine saves in goal.
In its second game of the day, Marist took on Cal Baptist. The host Lancers led 5-2 after the first quarter, and continued to lead with four goals in the second to take a 9-4 halftime advantage. The Red Foxes came back with four goals in the third to make the score 11-8, but could not score in the fourth. Swartz had three goals in the game, with Rampton and Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.) each scoring a pair of tallies. Barnett added two assists. Getchius had seven saves and three steals.
Marist will play its first home games of the season this weekend in the 2010 Marist Invitational at the McCann Natatorium. The Red Foxes will take on Boston University at 9:30 a.m. Saturday before taking on Brown at 5 p.m.
