Red Foxes Rally In Fourth Quarter To Defeat Vermont 13-11

BURLINGTON, VT. - The Marist men's lacrosse team outscored Vermont 5-0 in the fourth quarter to overcome an 11-8 deficit, winning 13-11 at Moulton Winder Field on Saturday. Junior attack Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with six points on four goals and two assists. Marist is now 3-0 on the season, its best start since going 2-1 to start the 2004 season.

Seniors Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) and Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) each had hat tricks in the game. Freshman Sam Altiero (Randolph, N.J.) won his second consecutive game with six saves in the second half.

The Red Foxes got off to a good start, as Teichmann found Sharkey for the first goal of the game at the 10:29 mark of the opening quarter. Vermont (0-4) then scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead with 5:59 to go in the first. Marist cut the deficit to one when Rice scored with 4:21 remaining in the quarter, making the score 3-2. The Catamounts then got goals from Geoff Worley and Liam Thomas to go ahead 5-2 with 13:10 to go in the second quarter.

Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) put the Red Foxes back on the board with a goal from Zindel at the 12:25 mark of the second. Vermont then got back-to-back goals from Thomas and Drew Philie to take a 7-3 lead with 4:59 remaining in the first half. The Catamounts led 9-5 with 1:07 to go in the quarter when Sharkey scored his first goal of the game to make the score 9-6 before halftime.

Sharkey scored again to open the third quarter, putting in a feed from Mike McLachlan (Norwalk, Conn.) to get Marist within two 9-7 with 11:42 remaining. Teichmann then got the Red Foxes within one, 9-8, with a tally at the 8:49 mark of the third quarter. Once again, Vermont would score back-to-back goals to take an 11-8 lead. Philie's goal at the 1:03 mark of the third was the Catamounts' 11th, and final, goal of the game.

Zindel scored back-to-back goals at the 11:15 and 10:33 marks of the fourth quarter to make the score 11-10. Rice then tied the game with his second goal with 9:50 left in the game. Teichmann would be the one to give Marist the lead, as he put in a Rice pass to give the Red Foxes a 12-11 lead with 7:03 to go in the game. Zindel then gave Marist a 13-11 lead with his goal at the 5:25 mark. The Red Foxes won five of the six faceoffs in the fourth quarter, taking 11 shots to Vermont's seven.

Marist and Vermont each took 33 shots in the game. Both teams also had 21 shots on goal. The Red Foxes won 19 of the 27 faceoffs in the game, while Vermont forced 21 Marist turnovers. Philie had four goals for the Catamounts, with Worley adding three goals.

The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, March 13 with a 3 p.m. game against Binghamton at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
