FAIRFAX, VA. - The Marist softball team dropped its season opener against George Mason 5-0, in the Patriots tournament on Saturday. The Red Foxes gave up four first inning runs to George Mason and the home team never looked back. Freshman Emily Osterhaus (Swanee, Ga.) pitched a complete game and took the loss for Marist.
In the bottom of the first, Tori Dudley led off the game with a double. After Alyssa See reached on a fielding error, Dudley got to third before she was thrown out at the plate to keep the score knotted at 0.
Two batters later, Katie Rynex hit a bases clearing double to left center field which scored three runs. The Patriots would add a fourth run to lead 4-0 after one inning.
Sophomore Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) was the only Marist player to record a base hit in the game. She went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base on the day. In the bottom of the first she walked and stole second base, before she was stranded there. Lamoureux led off the Marist half of the fourth with a base hit up the middle.
Osterhaus threw all six innings in the circle for the Red Foxes. She gave up four hits and five runs, just two of which were earned. Osterhaus struck out five in her collegiate debut. She is 0-1 this season.
Marist will continue play at the George Mason Invitational at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 6 when they face Cornell. Sophomore Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) is the projected starter for the Red Foxes.
