FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Marist softball team suffered a 10-1 loss to Cornell in its second game of the George Mason Invitational on Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Red Foxes suffered a 5-0 loss to George Mason.
The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Cornell scored two runs in the first, six in the third and two in the fourth. The Red Foxes scored their lone run in the top of the fourth. With one out, junior left fielder Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) doubled, and then came around to score on a single by sophomore first baseman Lindsay Durant (Martinsville, N.J.).
Sophomore pitcher Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) started and took the loss for Marist, going 2.2 innings.
Marist is now 0-2 on the season. The Red Foxes conclude play in the George Mason Invitational on Sunday, when they face Bucknell at 9 a.m. and George Mason at 11:30 a.m.
