POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - A seven-goal first quarter was all the Marist water polo team needed as it trounced the Siena Saints 17-4 on Saturday in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Water Polo Championship semifinals at the McCann Center Natatorium. This is the fifth straight season that the Red Foxes have advanced to the Championship game of the conference tournament. Senior Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) led Marist with five goals while Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) added four tallies.
Marist (17-14) opened the game on a 4-0 run, with Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) bookending back-to-back Barnett goals 4:03 into the game. The Red Foxes led 5-2 when Swartz and Rampton scored in the final minute of the first to take a 7-2 lead. Marist then shut out the Saints 3-0 in the second quarter. Swartz, Barnett, and Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) each scored a goal as the Red Foxes took a 10-2 halftime lead.
Marist scored two goals early in the third to increase the lead to 12-2. After the Saints scored with 3:42 to go in the third to make the score 12-3, the Red Foxes got five straight goals from Swartz, Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.), and Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) in the fourth to take a 17-3 lead.
Eight different players scored for the Red Foxes on Saturday. Barnett, Pauli, and Swartz each had three assists in the game. Senior goalie Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made 14 saves in goal and also had three assists.
The Red Foxes will take on second-seeded Iona in the MAAC Water Polo Championship Game Sunday at 2 p.m. The Gaels defeated third-seeded Wagner 9-8 in double overtime in Saturday's second semifinal.
