Ten Question Timeout With Merrilynn Esteve

June 18, 2010

The Marist Athletics Department continues with its summer series "Ten Question Timeout." The next student-athlete to be interviewed is Merrilynn Esteve of the women's soccer team, who reached the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals in October.

1. My favorite athletic memory at Marist is...

  • This past year when we played Canisius. In the first half we were losing 2-0, and I worked really hard to get to a ball that was about to go out. I got there and served an awesome ball to the top of the 18. Kate Fox made an amazing run, got to the ball, beat the keeper and scored. It was so crucial, because that first goal turned the whole atmosphere of the game around. Then in the second half, I took a shot and one of their players hand-balled it in the box, and we got a penalty kick. Fox came over to me and I told her she should take it (because I knew that if she scored she would tie the all-time scoring record). She made a great shot and had tied the record. I think it's my favorite memory because I was able to be a part of her record-breaking career at Marist, which is really exciting. We worked so hard as a team to come back from a 2-0 deficit to win the game 4-2!

2. The most interesting thing I have done this summer is...

  • Go to Foxwoods in Connecticut with my best friend Alyssa from Marist and a bunch of her friends from home. It was really exciting and something I'd never done before. I'll probably never do it again because most of those games are really confusing!

3. I chose Marist because...

  • I chose Marist because when I stepped on the campus I knew it was where I wanted to be. The atmosphere was so welcoming and everyone was really friendly. The campus is beautiful, and I loved that it was on the Hudson. I also chose Marist because they had many opportunities to make an impact within the community, whether it was through soccer or other activities. It was also the perfect distance from home, so my family could come to most of my games which has always been really important to me to have their support.

4. The song I am most embarrassed to admit I have on my iPod is...

  • Nothing in This World by Paris Hilton… it's really upbeat and catchy, it's my guilty pleasure!

5. My favorite sports team/athlete is...

  • Since I'm from New Jersey, I've always been a huge New York Giants fan! I would have to say that two of my favorite athletes are Eli Manning and David Wright. They both just seem like really nice guys and are pretty humble.

6. If you could have dinner with three people (alive or dead) they would be...

  • Kristen Bell, Eminem, and Bob Marley. I know that these three people probably don't mesh that well together, but I really love them all. Kristen Bell is my favorite actress and she always strives to make a positive impact in the lives of those less fortunate then herself, which I really admire. I also just really like Eminem and Bob Marley and think it would at least make for some very interesting conversation.

7. If you could play another sport at Marist, it would be...

  • Lacrosse. I played in high school and I really miss it. I loved just weaving in and out of people and running up the field. It was just really fun, and I was always pretty bummed I had to give it up.

8. If you were deserted on an island and could have only three items with you, I would pick...

  • 1. My ipod so I could at least hear other people's voices
    2. My blanket so I wouldn't get cold at night, because I really hate being cold.
    3. And water, so I wouldn't die of thirst

9. My goal for next year is...

  • To win the MAAC and be the first team in our program's history to go to the NCAA Tournament. We came so close to winning the MAAC my freshman year, and the feeling of making it to the championship game was surreal. I also want to keep my GPA above a 3.5 because my grades and education are really important to me.

10. My plans after Marist are...

  • I'd really like to go back to Merida, Mexico and help to rebuild the community, and keep the children of the community out of trouble by developing some type of competitive soccer league. After being a part of the Global Outreach trip through Marist this past spring, I realized what a huge impact the game of soccer has on the Mexican culture, and I'd really like to help the kids in the community pursue their dreams of playing.
  • If for some reason I am unable to do that, I'd like to join AmeriCorps and live in another state focusing on community service, and the enhancement of a particular community. AmeriCorps would give me the opportunity to live somewhere in the U.S. and use my knowledge of social work to help others in need. After that I plan on going to get my master's in social work.
