POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In a matchup of two non-league foes, the Marist men's soccer team (3-3) defeated the Howard Bison (1-6) Saturday afternoon, 3-0. Junior Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) each tallied their third goal of the season only 4:13 apart in the second half to give the Red Foxes their third win of the season.
Senior Steven Morales (Farmingdale, N.Y.) capped off the day with his first goal of the season, off of an assist from junior Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) in the 75th minute. The three goals is a season-high for Marist.
After losing 2-0 at #2 University of Virginia Tuesday, the Red Foxes bounced back with a strong team effort at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes were able to maintain possession for the majority of the first half, tallying eight shots, two of which were on goal.
Marist came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders in the second half. With 30:00 to go in the stanza Szabo deflected an Alex George (Southold, N.Y.) cross off the right post, and continued the trend of constant pressure for the Red Fox attack.
In the 62nd minute, Szabo nestled a direct kick in the top corner to give Marist a 1-0 lead. The goal was Szabo's second of the season on a direct kick, both of which have been game-winners. It was his third marker of the year.
Before Szabo could enjoy his grasp on the team lead in goals, Brossard added to the Red Foxes' lead with his third goal of the season in the 66th minute. Brossard has been enjoying a successful sophomore campaign, ranking second on the team with seven shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) recorded his second shutout of the season in the win. The Red Foxes permitted just three shots in the contest, none of which were on goal. The defensive effort was largely due to the strong effort of the Red Foxes' backs - freshman Tony Carreras (Valley Stream, N.Y.), junior Troy Confessore (Kendall Park, N.J.), sophomore Josh Faga (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Fred Osborne (Trumbull, Conn.).
The match marked the first time the Red Foxes did not allow a shot on goal since a 5-0 win over Canisius on Oct. 8, 2004 - the season Marist won its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, and advanced to its first NCAA Tournament.
The Red Foxes will look to continue their winning ways Wednesday with a non-conference match at Hartwick. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Oneonta, N.Y.
