POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night in a 1-0 overtime loss to Fordham at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Tim Richardson scored the difference maker with four seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lift the Rams to their fourth victory of the season.
Richardson found the ball at his feet after a Fordham (4-4) corner kick put the ball in the box. The corner connected with Marcus Axelsson, who found Richardson about nine yards from the goal. The shot beat Marist (5-4) goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) to his right.
To force overtime, Marist was able to ward off the Fordham offense on four consecutive corner kicks at the end of regulation. The four opportunities happened consecutively over the span of 1:36 from the 85th-87th minutes. The flurry produced two shots, one of which went on goal.
Despite the Red Foxes being outshot 19-9 in the match, the Red Foxes had a number of chances in the second half. The best of the opportunities came with 31:16 to play in the stanza. Junior Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) served a ball to freshman James Curley (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Curley got a clean head on the ball, but the shot went right into the hands of Fordham goalkeeper Ryan Meara.
On their way to the victory, the Rams had an opportunity to finish the game in the 98th minute. Aaron Markowitz squarely hit the far post on a ground ball.
The Red Foxes will begin a three-game road swing to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Marist will travel to Loudonville, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 9 when it takes on Siena at 2 p.m.
