BALTIMORE, Md.
- The Red Foxes got back on the winning track in MAAC play Sunday afternoon in
Baltimore as Marist (10-5, 5-1 MAAC) earned a 1-0 overtime victory over Loyola
(5-10, 3-2 MAAC). In a hard-fought game that saw Marist control most offensive
categories, it took a "Sportscenter Top 10" worthy play that ended with an
Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.) header to clinch the
win in the 94th minute.
The first half consisted of offensively-charged back and
forth play as both squads looked early and often to put the first goal on the
board. In the first 6 minutes alone, each team had two shots and one on goal
respectively.
During a 73 second span of play between 23:32 and 24:45,
the duo of Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) and Epstein peppered Loyola's defense
and goalkeeper with three shots; two on goal and one blocked.
The half closed with more free-flowing offense as the
team's exchanged four quality scoring opportunities. Loyola's Gianna Mangione
tested Marist's goalkeeper junior Caitlin Landsman (Burke, Va.) in the 33rd
and 44th minutes. Landsman's saves surrounded a Kylee McIntosh
(Cheshire, Conn.) shot that rang off of the post and a Jaclynn Sabia (Wayne,
N.J.) shot that was denied by Loyola's goalkeeper Didi Haracic.
At the half, Marist had an 8-7 lead in shots and a 5-4
advantage in shots on goal.
Play became more physical in the second 45 and hence the
offensive opportunities decreased quite drastically. The Red Foxes took a total
of four shots and held the Greyhounds out of the shooting column. Sabia had
both of the best two chances, as she put both of her attempts on goal.
Faced with a 0-0 score after 90 minutes of regulation
action, Marist came out and made sure they'd be rewarded for their hard work in
the win column. In what would be the final 90 seconds of play, the Red Foxes
took three shots and earned two corner kicks.
The game-winning scoring possession began with Guiney in
control of the ball. After a few dribbles, the sophomore midfielder lofted a high
cross deep into Loyola's box, where Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) received
the pass and quickly bicycle kicked the ball over her and the goalkeeper's head
to a waiting Epstein, who headed the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0
victory at 93:43.
This was Epstein's eighth goal of the season and sixth
game-winner.
With her four first half saves, Landsman earned her fifth
win and third shutout of 2011. Haracic was credited with nine saves in a losing
effort.
For the game, the Red Foxes outshot the Greyhounds 15-8
and 9-4 in the shots on net category.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 21
when they host Niagara in a 7 p.m. matchup.
Friday will also mark Marist Women's Soccer's Alumnae Day
and Game. Festivities for past Marist players will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a
game and continue with a 6 p.m. reception before the Marist-Niagara matchup.
