Men's Soccer Secures Double Overtime Victory Over Saint Peter's 3-2

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist men's soccer team got back to their winning ways with a 3-2 double overtime victory over Saint Peter's Friday afternoon in Jersey City. The Red Foxes (6-5-4, 2-3-1 MAAC) were led by senior Krystian Witkowski's (Rochester, N.Y.) game-winning goal in the 104th minute and six saves by grad student Steve Skonieczny (LaGrangeville, N.Y.).

Marist started the game by putting their first three shots on goal over the opening 14 minutes. Lucky for the Red Foxes two of those shots found the back of the net. At 7:57 freshman Dylan Lee (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) opened the scoring as he and junior Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) connected on a 2-on-none opportunity inside the box. A little over six minutes later, senior Lucas Szabo (Bethesda. Md.) notched goal number two at 13:50. Szabo converted a deflected shot by freshman Matt Wendelken (Massapequa, N.Y.) for the tally.

Saint Peter's quickly responded at 14:38 with a goal by Noah Sadoui. The pace of play slowed and the teams combined for just two shots over the next 26 plus minutes. The Peacocks' second shot was a header by Sadoui that beat Skonieczny at 41:17.

Coming out in the second half tied 2-2, the Red Foxes were on the defensive as Saint Peter's recorded the first four shots of the half. Three of the four were on net and were saved by Skonieczny.  Marist registered their first shot on goal at 69:20 with a Brossard attempt.

The final 20 minutes of regulation closed with each team putting one shot on goal.

In the first overtime period, the Red Foxes survived a Saint Peter's attack that saw the Peacocks take three shots within a 40 second span from 96:26 to 97:06.

Following a save by Skonieczny in the 102nd minute, the Red Foxes composed themselves and put together an offensive possession that ended with an Anthony Rozmus (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) pass to Witkowski through the box that the senior converted for his second game-winner of 2011 at 103:15.

The 3-2 double overtime victory saw Saint Peter's outshoot Marist 14-7 and 8-6 in the shots on goal category.

Skonieczny made six saves as he raised his record to 6-5-4.

After the game head coach Matt Viggiano remarked that he "was happy for his team to find a way to win this game. It wasn't pretty and the conditions weren't great, but we gutted it out. It showed a lot of character for us come out and get the win after last weekend."

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they travel to Manhattan for a 10 a.m. matchup.
