EDISON, N.J. - In
the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's player of the week awards, freshman
guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) was named Rookie of the Week in
recognition of his play versus Bucknell and Colgate this past week.
Lewis filled a key role as the Red Foxes' sixth man
during their two games this past week. On Tuesday, Nov. 22 versus Bucknell, the
young wing player compiled a strong statistical game with seven points, four
rebounds and a career-high four assists, as his strong drives to the rim
successfully drew defenders away from his teammates on the outside for
wide-open conversions.
On Saturday, Nov. 26 versus Colgate, Lewis had an even
stronger day as he led the Red Foxes to victory with a career-high 23 points,
three rebounds, two assists and a block. A key to his great offensive day was
his stout defending as he stole possessions from Colgate five times. The
freshman played a huge role in the Red Foxes pulling away from Colgate as he
scored 16 of his team's 20 points and turned a 43-43 game into a 63-54 lead
over an 8:45 stretch of play in the second half. For the week, Lewis averaged
15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals in just 26 minutes per
game.
This is his first career MAAC weekly honor and first for
the team since they went back to back with the Rookie of the Week awards on
Dec. 6 and Dec. 13, 2010.
The Red Foxes (2-4) will face off with two MAAC opponents
this week as they travel to Loyola on Thursday, Dec. 1 for a 7:30 p.m. matchup
and host Rider on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at the McCann Arena.
